Weightlifting ace Choe Hyo Sim

Watching weightlifters fly the DPRK flag in the sky over the world on TV in her childhood, Choe Hyo Sim, weightlifter of the Kigwancha Sports Club who is Kim Il Sung Youth Honour Prize winner and Merited Athlete, dreamed of becoming an excellent athlete, world-class weightlifting ace, to exalt the honour of her country in the future without fail.

Being enrolled at the well-organized reserve athletes training system of the country, she practised basic techniques of weightlifting. In 2008 she began her career as weightlifter at the sports club. She trained hard to attain her unusually high goal. So coaches and other athletes called her a passionate girl and eager beaver.

While honing her physical and technical skills through intensive training, she acquired her special ability in jerk to take an honourable place among the ranks of weightlifting stars in the world.

Choe, who became familiar to the people for her calm and composed attitudes in matches, grabbed 32 medals, including 11 golds, at 14 international competitions like the 31st Olympic Games and the 2019 IWF World Weightlifting Championships, thus exalting the honour of the country.

First champion of world Greco-Roman wrestling in DPRK

The Greco-Roman wrestling, which began at the First Olympic Games, has a long history and it is designed to use only the upper part of the body unlike freestyle wrestling match.

In the previous Greco-Roman events of the world wrestling championships, the European athletes who had better upper body abilities were dominant. But Yun Won Chol from the DPRK won the title at the men’s 55kg category in the Greco-Roman wrestling of the 2013 world wrestling championships, thus emerging as the first world Greco-Roman wrestling champion in the country.

At that time, many experts and spectators crowded around him and gave a thumbs-up sign, while a member of the International Wrestling Federation said in admiration after seeing the contest that the wrestling techniques of the DPRK made rapid progress.

Four-time national record breaker


Jo Kum Ryong, anathlete of the Amnokgang Sports Club, hasrenewed national records four times in the national 100- and 200-metres races in recent years.

With a suitable physical conditions for sprints, Jo learned the rudiments of athletics at Kaeson Juvenile Sports School in Pyongyang.

The then instructor Kwon Ki Du led him who was very clever and had good sensation of movement to concentrate on studying mathematics and checked his math homework every day.

DPRK soccer ace Kim Kyong Hwa

Born into an ordinary office worker’s family in Sinpho, she began to learn football at the age of 10.

She made her international debut at Universiad in 2003.

She unfolded a thrilling scoring scene in the first match played against the German team by dint of a powerful mid-and-long-range shot and grabbed the attention of spectators in the following games with fast and accurate assists and electrifying midfield shots, thus making a big contribution to her team’s win. 

Playing at the April 25 Sports Club afterwards, she showed off her remarkable skills in different domestic and international games and earned the title of Merited Athlete.

People’s Athlete Ri Hak Son—Olympic gold medallist

The 25th Olympic Games took place in Barcelona, Spain, in 1992. 

DPRK freestyle wrestler Ri Hak Son, who took part in the 52kg-category event, overpowered all his rivals and beat an American world champion 8:1 in the final, thus demonstrating the dignity and honour of his country. 

He made his international debut at the international freestyle wrestling competition held in 1987. 

He won the 48kg-category event at the competition, and took the first place at the fifth Asian freestyle wrestling championships and the international freestyle wrestling competition in 1988 to emerge as a star in the world of wrestling.

Two-time world wrestling champion Ri Jae Sik

Ri Jae Sik made his name as a two-time world wrestling champion in the 1980s.

He won 24 gold and one silver medals during his playing career.

Born into a worker’s family in Waudo District, Nampho, he began to learn wrestling in the sports club of Waudo District at the time and played for the April 25 Sports Club from 1982.

Since then, he had cut a conspicuous figure by winning national events including the national championships and the then Mangyongdae Prize Games.
